Wrapping up the year 2007

The end of the year came with a fierce charge of wonderful events. On December 30, last year, we were getting married in Bolivia, so we celebrated our first anniversary having a romantic dinner just the two of us for the last time, for Annita decided to come on the last day of the year. What a beautiful gift she is!

Caryn did a great job and courageously went through the whole process. Some mild contractions had started on Saturday morning, but it was not until Monday morning that they became stronger and more frequent. We were admitted in the hospital around 10 AM, when she was 2 cm. dilated, and then she had some arduous hours before she transitioned to the pushing stage, which was relatively short. While she was working hard, the excited soon-to-be father was taking pictures all over the place. Anna Carolina was born at 4:51 PM. She weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. Mom and baby are doing great.

Christmas Day Celebration - Dec. 25

This is the first Christmas that I celebrate with my beloved Caryn. As a new family we are blending our families’ traditions while we add novel ones to the mixture. We started our Christmas morning by singing a worship song that reminded us of the Savior’s birth. Then we read Mathew 1:17-25, intertwining English and Spanish so Annita can hear both. We were reminded on how God had mercy on us and saved us from our sin (v. 21). Next, we recounted the many gifts that we received from God this past year: our marriage, our daughter, financial provision, a new Care Group and new relationships, just to mention some. Our hearts were filled with thankfulness and renewed hope. Then we opened gifts after having a delicious seasonal breakfast prepared by my multi-gifted wife. What a wonderful time we had!

Christmas medley for our baby Anna Carolina

Our baby Anna Carolina is one week away from her expected due date! As we enjoy this season with our friends, we modified the words of a couple of traditional Christmas songs to relate the exciting changes that pregnancy brings along. The video has subtitles to help you understand the customized lyrics.

My new job

My internship at NASA has ended. But the Lord in his faithfulness has provided a full-time job for me, which is able to support our family. As always, God’s timing was perfect, as I was able to start my new job about one week before Caryn left her position as administrative assistant at our church. In His grace, God has permitted my salary to be sufficient to allow Caryn to dedicate herself completely to our family and our home. On top of that, my office is only 10 minutes from our house and therefore I will be able to easily care for my little princesses!
I am working for Lockheed Martin whose principal business areas are Aeronautics and Electronic, Space and Information Systems. Below you can see two of its products. I am specifically working with the group that implements internal corporate information systems, supporting applications for sectors as the legal department and HR.

I am very excited to have the opportunity to work for such a large and prestigious company, while our hearts are filled with gratitude for the immeasurable goodness of God, expressed this time in the provision of this job.

The birth is getting closer

Here is Caryn, just about to begin her 9th month of pregnancy, standing next to our crib. Little Anna continues to grow and tells us that she’s getting ready to join us on the outside soon. We are both excitedly waiting!

Caryn’s friends threw her a baby shower. They blessed her with lots of clothes for the first months of life of our little daughter, as well as a big cake... made of diapers!

Secret Trip to Bolivia

Caryn and I had a secret trip to Bolivia in the first week of September. God, in his kindness, provided all the means to realize it. Finances were available through an unexpected gift, Caryn’s boss let her go even when she had no more vacation days and the paper work for my Green Card was accelerated.

So we kept the plans concealed and we secretly arrived one night in order to surprise my family. Once there, we took a taxi and we directed the driver to ring the bell and to ask for the Troche family, and then to announce that he had two packages and one little one for them…

Surprised dadMy dad went down to open the door wondering who would deliver packages at 10 pm. The surprise was great when he found out that the packages were alive as he lifted up his arms filled with joy :)

Hugs and KissesWhen mom heard the voices she jumped up from bed and run down the stairs together with my sister to welcome us with many hugs and kisses and overflowing ecstasy.

Singing Happy Birthday In pure Bolivian style, they organized a celebration for Caryn’s birthday in two days. She blew the candles of a delicious cake reading: “Caryn, may the Lord bless you” while the family sang not one but three birthday songs.

We also had a tasty meal at an excellent restaurant and she received fresh lively flowers.

Tribute to His Majesty

O God of the universe, King over every nation. You are the living and true God, and none is like you. King eternal, you are great and your name is great in might. At your wrath the earth quakes and the nations cannot endure your indignation. Who would not fear you, O God? And who would not bow down before you? For you are worthy to be feared. Among all the kings of all nations of all times, there is no one like you. For you alone and no one else, you only are God, YHWH, the Lord of Hosts. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth with all that is in it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve all of them with your vigor.

The host of heaven worships you, and you know each one of them by name, and by your power they are kept in their place. The sun, the planets, the starts, the meteoroids, the moons, the solar systems, the galaxies, the black holes, and the unfathomable wonders of the universe, are the work of your hands and you designed them in detail; you created them by the word of your power. Not only have you put them in their place, but you also have established the physics and gravitational laws that uphold in equilibrium the immensity of the cosmos with all and each one of its components. Though we are overwhelmed and astonished by the things that we can see and partially understand, there is a myriad of celestial bodies and phenomena that our minds cannot grasp or whose existence is still unknown to us. However, you know the most concealed mysteries of your creation.

O God, you are amazing! King of the universe, infinite God, before the ages and throughout the ages, you are Lord. It is incomprehensible that, with the unlimited power that you possess, you would have set your eyes on weak and diminutive men. How arrogant we are! How foolish and ignorant! Our minds are veiled and corrupted by our ungodliness and sin. Our vision is completely darkened by our pride. The putrefaction of our souls has reached all the cracks of our being, and depravity affects all the areas of our reality.

We believe that we have the right to control our lives and to walk the paths that we crave, without being accountable to the Inventor of our substance, the Architect of our being, the Supplier of our very breath. We rebel against the only one who has the power to deliver us from slavery, to give us abundant rest, to raise the dry and inert bones of our spiritual death, to flood with life hearts paralyzed by selfishness and fictitious self-sufficiency.

My cancerous soul was running away from you. Even when I had tasted the sweetness of your whispers, even when my ears had enjoyed the tones that carried the excellence of your name, even when there was a partial knowledge of your presence, my obstinate will refused to surrender before the feet of him who was able to provide the happiness that persistently eluded me and that I had so much longed for.

In the midst of my desolation, everything seemed to be favorable in the surface: a prestigious degree, a promising career, a juicy salary, an overflowing bank account, a loving family, a protecting roof… I had almost everything, but in reality I was poor, miserable, naked and in total spiritual bankruptcy. My blindness was absolute and terminal cancer spread all over my soul, without hope and without God. I was openly opposing you, hating you and despising you with my attitude, rejecting you with my pride, resisting you with my insignificant power, I was your enemy, a son of disobedience, a recipient of your wrath, your anger and your fury. I had no desire to change or to turn to you, to fix my sight unto the throne of God, from where my help could come.

Until one day… O what a grand moment! O what a marvelous occasion! Despite my barren resistance you fractured my stubbornness; you defeated my opposition with your gracious mighty arm; you smoothly, lovingly, gently, firmly, decisively ceased my frenetic rush towards hell. You turned my view in the direction of your glory and my strength fainted, the scales fell off my eyes, life began to flow through my thirsty parched veins, my heart started beating – it was of stone, you transformed it to a heart of flesh. My crippled legs were freed and they leaped with joy, my dormant arms were articulated and I lifted them up to heaven, the heaven that cannot contain your splendor. My tongue was untied to shout with joy and authentic liberty, to proclaim the virtues of him who called me from the darkness to his marvelous light, to utter worship that my filthy lips had never pronounced. Suddenly, my hearing was made sensitive to your sublime words; my eardrums resonated in harmony with your peaceful message of incomprehensible love:

“My life I give for you, my blood I shed in your place. The fury and eternal punishment that you deserve with all justice… I absorb it. The unquenchable fire of the righteous divine wrath assigned to you… I consume it in my body. Your sins are forgiven… I pay them on your behalf. The decree of crimes that accuses you is nullified and nailed on this cross… my cross. Your death, your cancer, your illness… I suffer them. Live! Go! Run! You are free!”

Why my Lord? Why so much love for a vile sinner such as I? Why peace for your enemy? Why extend mercy to an insolent adversary? Your grace, o Lord, is inscrutable. Your love cannot be compared at all to the futile human intents to imitate it. Love is an abused word, used to write manmade songs and poetry which are empty and senseless. Love, for humanity, is simply another synonym for the insatiable craving of man to receive all attention for himself, seeking to obtain his own benefit. Human love is nothing but a cheap grotesque forgery of divine love, which is real and true.

You loved me first, when I hated you. You absorbed in yourself the punishment that I deserved because of my sin, even when I was your enemy. When there was no sign of submission before your sovereignty, you my Lord, the Infinite, the Almighty, the Creator, the one who dwells in unapproachable light, you, my God, gave me life, you freed me, you saved me!

Therefore, O Lord, I beg you, I plead you, through your endless power enabling me by your Spirit, grant me to honor you as you deserve. That for the rest of my short existence, I may live to glorify your name by means of my studies, job, free time, service in your church, thoughts, actions, values, decisions, will, worship, and my desire to share with others such an extraordinary love available to all who are, like I was, dead in trespasses and sin, so that they may receive immeasurable mercy from the God perfect in justice and magnificent in overflowing grace. Amen.

Dreams of a child

When I was a kid my dad bought me an aeronautical lab kit. It must have been very expensive, because back then those items were rare in Bolivia, my home country, and they had to be imported from far lands. But my dad liked to express his love by getting these exotic toys to play with me. Although I understood little of the manual, since it was not written in my native language, we spent hour after hour making physics experiments, building airplanes and assembling rockets that we tried in multiple testing bases.

After many years of experimentation and a lot of fun, my potential career as an Aerospace Engineer vanished when our most ambitious project failed miserably. The rocket was supposed to start slowly, gaining speed and altitude gradually. As part of the last stage, when the force of gravity had reduced the rocket’s speed to almost zero, a small detonation had to gently expel its tip, while an unwrapping parachute would finally open, sustaining the rest of the body in a gracious and elegant descent. Well, things do not always go the way we expect. The rocket only ascended up to 6 feet and then a not-so-tiny-explosion roared tearing apart the fragility of our creation as we witnessed with perplexed eyes the debris falling around us as in slow motion.

Time passed and I concentrated my efforts in Computer Science rather than Engineering. Being realistic, the opportunities as an Aerospace Engineer in a third world country were practically nonexistent. I can’t imagine the Bolivian government sending into orbit the satellite EVO III (name of the current president). However, my wonder for outer space and manmade artifacts sent beyond the limits of the atmospheric envelope that surrounds our planet kept dormant.

Decades later, through an almost random sequence of events from a human perspective, the Lord sent me to the U.S. to receive theological training so that I may know Him better and admire more his glory, holiness and majesty. Following, He decided that I should go back to school, providing a free ride to get my Master’s degree in Computer Science. After much suffering and some aborted attempts to quit, God provided the strength to finish.

I continued on the Ph.D. track, but a divine intervention changed the course of our lives again. God gave us our first child as a gift. This led me to look for a full time job, right after I was granted my work permit for the first time. The Lord plans times and events in a breathtaking fashion. But before ending my academic endeavors, He had prepared one more surprise… He conceded to me the dream that I had had as a child, a fantasy that was forgotten and silenced by the passing of the years and the impossibility of its fulfillment. Once again, my God exercised his dominion over the kingdom of mortals and persuaded them to let me work at NASA!

I am enjoying every single moment of my time there as a summer intern, while my heart humbly overflows with gratitude for another unexpected gift of undeserved grace. In the meantime, I am still looking for a full time job to support my family. But we trust that God will provide one at the right time for He has proved himself infallibly faithful over and over again.

A GIRL!!! Week 20

On Thursday, August 16, we went to the photo studio once more to take a new set of pictures for our baby, who had to pose a lot :)

The technician said: "She is a GIRL!". Wow, we were a little surprised because the doctor had told us during the first weeks that she suspected we had a boy. Well, apparently she was wrong.

Whether a girl or a boy we are very happy and our most fervent prayer is that Jesus will reveal himself to her and that she will respond recognizing him as her Lord. We constantly pray for her salvation so that one day she will serve Him, honoring the role that God has granted her. As parents, we also ask to be good examples for her and that we can lead her in the fear of the Lord.

She is half way through her journey inside the womb of my beloved Caryn who by now shows distinguishable signs of her pregnancy.

We already have an idea of her name, but we are going to disclose it later. In the meantime, enjoy a close up of her face where you can appreciate a glimpse of her right eye (above) and the picture below where she seems to be sucking her finger.

Until the next entry…
